about 8e Wednesday Winery

The Wednesday Winery is a business for both the wine connoisseur and the wine novice. It’s for them to come together and enjoy an experience new to both. We specialize in mixing wine education with pleasure and entertainment. People of all levels of wine knowledge can come and enjoy themselves while learning and tasting wine. We strive to teach in an unpretentious and unassuming manner so that everyone feels welcome and able to ask questions and enjoy learning without feeling laughed at.

Allison Macey is The Wednesday Winery's founder and wine tasting instructor. She has been mastering the art and science of wine for years in every culinary corner of the world and has found that her passion is making the simple enjoyment of great wine accessible for everyone. What started out as wine tasting parties hosted in her own home quickly grew into a business that now serves all of Southern California and the globe. Here is her wine journey, in her own words.

Who else buys wine, loves it, then forgets all about it until you go to buy another bottle and are desperate to buy the good one again? Who can’t tell the difference between a Pinot Noir and a Malbec? Who buys a bottle just based on the price or prettiness of the label? This was me.

All through my 20s I went to wineries and showrooms and would leave with little to no knowledge of what I had just tasted. I didn’t know why I liked or disliked a certain red or white wine and I was too afraid to ask the pretentious sommelier who had poured me a glass and then taken off to talk to the real wine intellectuals. It was frustrating, feeling like I’d wasted my money when I’d paid just as much as the others had.

So I decided to do my own research.

I started taking classes from BIVB and UC Davis, reading every online educational material I could my hands on, and mastering every Wine Folly quiz I could find. It was a truly interactive learning experience as I'd read, sip, reflect, repeat.

I had the pleasure of serving as the wine steward at Costco where I provided wine consultation and wine sales strategy. In my first weekend, I was able to triple wine sales. This experience allowed me to meet some of the finest local wine connoisseurs, as well as dive deeper into the sales side of wine and how wine knowledge and a customer-centered strategy can increase revenue for shops, bars and restaurants.

I've had the opportunity to travel to wineries and tasting rooms across the US and Europe, learning about different local wines, winemaking methodology, and wine culture. I was able to take in all the rich, beautiful terroirs of wine (how climate, soil, and elevation bring us the aromatics and taste we love in our favorite wines). These experiences have taught me just how much we get to travel the world every time we open a new bottle.

After I had my first baby, I decided I wanted to stay home and be with her instead of going back to work but I still loved the idea of wine tasting and edification. I decided to hold some wine tastings in my own home with friends and family and we all loved it. I kept creating new events and they kept coming back and bringing more people. The Wednesday Winery grew from there. People started hiring me for events in their own homes and it became bigger than I ever thought it would.

Thank you so much for supporting a family business and your interest in learning more about this wonderful world of wine. We can't wait to sip, learn and enjoy a great glass with you soon!
