The best wines from $40-$60

Suddenly we’re in the more serious wine bottles. This is not everyone's everyday wine. If it’s yours, I’d like to be invited for dinner! These wines can be gifted to anyone from your brand new girlfriend’s birthday, boss’ dinner at his/her house, dinner with a potential client, wedding gift, or bring it for Thanksgiving with the family. If you’re still in the wine aisle at your local grocery store, look at the top row and there will probably be a deal like buy 4, get 50% off or something because they aren’t their big movers. If you can snag a deal like this, grab it! There are some great popular wines at this price range that will even satisfy your wine snob big brother or your boss’s wife who loves to criticize any bottle under $100.

The Best Red Wines Under $60

If you’re buying for your boss, purchase a Duckhorn Cab or Merlot. They’re well-known and well-loved. If you’re buying for a girlfriend or a wedding gift, get the Purlieu le Piche Cabernet Sauvignon. The bottle is beautiful and the wine is delicious. If you’re buying for a client, buy the Stag’s Leap ARTEMIS Cabernet Sauvignon. They’ll know you mean business.

The Best White Wines Under $60

Again, the beauty of the bottle is important when it comes to gifting wine, so for this white, I’d pick Mayacamas or Far Niente Chardonnay. Big, bold and Buttery, pair this with Lobster, Salmon or Creamy pasta dishes.

The Best Rosés Under $60

If you can find it, the Domaines Ott Rosé is a great Rosé, Provence in a bottle, but for a gift to your special someone, Chateau d’Esclans is a beautiful option. Pale, soft, refreshing, drink this with a special vegetable prominent meal, such as eggplant parmesan, veggie lasagna or onion soup.

The Best Sparkling Wine Under $60

Now we’re getting into the good stuff! Get the Louis Roederer Collection 242. Buy a few for Thanksgiving dinner and no one will care that you didn’t bring a side dish.

We’ve reached the price range where it becomes important, not exactly necessary, but advisable, to start looking at specialty wine shops, instead of your local Stater Bros. The merchants there really know what they’re selling and can help you if you need it. Find one that fulfills your wine needs and not just the closest one to your home. It’s important to establish a relationship with them since you’re spending good money now. Make sure they make you comfortable and not overwhelmed or ignorant. I will however, continue to advise you to look at Costco for high end wines. They have some great selections and can come at an awesome discount. If you know what you’re looking for and they don’t have it in stock, ask in the front and they can look up surrounding stores for you to purchase the wine.

Happy sipping!
